The problem may not be with your sound board but with your CDrom drive.
I tried to run rebel assualt on a 1X CD rom drive and the sound echoed
so poorly that I could not understand the voices.  I upgraded my CD rom 
to a 2X and the problem is much better but not gone.  HTH
